While the closures and layoffs at PNM and Westmoreland have made headlines, San Juan College employees are behind the scenes working with displaced employees to provide options for their next steps.
Through a partnership with the State of New Mexico’s Department of Workforce Solutions, San Juan College’s Center for Workforce Development has led this initiative, offering participants robust services including career assessment, well-being training, and financial literacy.
“We know this is a difficult time for former employees,” explains Continuing Education Director Liesl Dees. “We hope that through an emphasis on wellness and through small gestures, we’ve been able to assist participants to truly re-envision what success looks like in their lives.”
As part of the Re-envisioning Success program, the Advising, Counseling and Student Achievement Centers have provided guidance to those who envision further education. The Center for Student Careers and Employment has supported participants continuing their job searches by helping them navigate the online application experience, revisiting resumes, writing professional cover letters, and practicing interview skills.
“It’s an honor to serve and help those in our community who are experiencing such dramatic life changes,” shares Rapid Response Coordinator Janet Hebbe, “Especially those who have worked for over 40 years at the mine or power plant.”
The Re-envisioning Success program began November 14, with most opportunities concluding before winter break while getting students who are returning to school ready for the spring semester. For more information, contact the Rapid Response Coordinator at 505-566-3804.
