In a successful partnership spanning over 15 years, the San Juan College Foundation and the Merrion Family Foundation have joined forces to honor and support graduates of the SJC Honors Program.
Over this period, their combined efforts have led to an average enrollment of more than 400 students per semester for the past
10 years, in the largest college honors program in the region.
The Honors Program dedicates itself to identifying, nurturing, and empowering outstanding students on their academic journey. The focus is steadfast on students’ futures, understanding that their academic performance can significantly improve as they evolve and mature. Some Honors graduates start their education with developmental courses and, through perseverance and hard work, become Honors graduates.
Thanks to the generosity of the Merrion Family Foundation, San Juan College Honors graduates receive a check from the San Juan College Foundation ranging from $200 - $500 and special recognition at graduation. The base requirement to graduate with honors is to complete 12 hours of Honors courses while maintaining a 3.0 or higher in Honors courses, and a cumulative grade point average of 3.25.
The mission of the SJC Honors Program is to foster critical thinking and higher level learning among students, provide innovative, cross-disciplinary learning experiences beyond the traditional curriculum, and better prepare students for future careers and or a transfer to a four-year institution through scholarship opportunities and university partnerships.
Honors graduates in 2023 earned the opportunity to receive transfer scholarships to several esteemed institutions, including Cottey College, Ft. Lewis College, New Mexico Highlands University, New Mexico State University, Prescott College, SW Minnesota State, University of New Mexico, Wayland Baptist University, Western New Mexico University, and New Mexico Tech.
The SJC Honors Program is unique and, with the dedication of the San Juan College Foundation and The Merrion Family Foundation, enables students to experience success in their academic life. SJC Honors courses are offered each semester and available to all students.
