San Juan College proudly congratulates nursing student Keena Jim for being crowned Ms. Indigenous San Juan College for the 2024-2025 term.
Jim, a Navajo/Hopi student from Shiprock, was one of three contestants in this year’s pageant, which showcased contemporary and traditional talents along with a question-and-answer session.
Showcasing Talent and Cultural Heritage
During the pageant, Jim displayed her diverse talents by performing a musical piece on the trumpet and presenting the traditional Navajo hair bun, a cultural symbol of her heritage. In the Q&A session, she answered questions posed by a panel of judges that included Jaymie Begay, Ms. Indigenous SJC 2022-2023, and renowned fashion designer Jolonzo Goldtooth. Other judges on the panel were SJC employees Mindi-Kim Schrum, Alejandra Meeks, and Damien Augustine.
Celebrating Indigenous Culture at San Juan College
The Ms. Indigenous San Juan College Pageant, coordinated by the SJC Native American Center, celebrates the rich cultural diversity of Native American students and the surrounding community. Since its inception, the pageant has built a legacy of empowering Indigenous women, forming a sisterhood of titleholders who continue to serve both San Juan College and their respective cultures.
Keena Jim's Message to the Community
"I want to express appreciation for our elders, parents, and relatives,” said Jim. “They have raised and taught us so many things. We need to keep passing along their knowledge to younger generations."
Jim’s reign as Ms. Indigenous San Juan College will continue through fall 2025.
