Innovative Alternative Licensure Program Prepares New Educators for Classroom Success

The milestone marks a major step in strengthening the region’s teaching workforce while offering aspiring educators an innovative and supportive path to licensure.

Over the past year, these dedicated candidates have worked side-by-side with experienced mentor teachers in San Juan County schools, gaining real-world experience in lesson planning, classroom management, and student engagement. Now, they’re moving forward into full-time teaching positions—better prepared, more confident, and deeply connected to their local communities.

“The residency helped me gain real-world experience working directly with students and understanding classroom management,” said one participant. “The mentorship allowed me to observe expert teaching and reflect on my own practices. I never would’ve considered becoming a teacher if it wasn’t for the residency year.”

A New Pathway for Aspiring Teachers

Unlike traditional programs, SJC’s Alternative Licensure Program provides a structured, three-year pathway for individuals who already hold a bachelor’s degree or higher.

The program begins with an optional first-year residency, giving candidates the opportunity to co-teach under the guidance of an experienced mentor. This immersive approach allows residents to apply their coursework in real-time while learning effective strategies for managing diverse classrooms.

Those who choose the residency track receive a $35,000 stipend funded by the New Mexico Public Education Department (NMPED), helping alleviate financial barriers so they can focus fully on developing as educators.

After the residency year, participants transition into full-time teaching roles while completing two additional years of coursework through the Alternative Licensure Program. Throughout the process, they continue receiving mentorship and professional development support to help them grow as educators.

Investing in the Future of Education

This residency model was developed by the SJC Teacher Education Program to provide not just licensure, but also long-term confidence and classroom readiness.

“As these seven new teachers step into their classrooms and begin their journey, they represent more than just a new generation of educators, they represent a powerful investment in the future of local education,” said Residency Coordinator Tia Johnson.
