San Juan College has announced a new academic partnership with Western Governors University (WGU), a nonprofit and accredited online university.

This transfer agreement creates expanded pathways for SJC students and employees to pursue affordable, flexible bachelor’s and master’s degree programs.

Flexible, Affordable Pathways to Higher Education

The collaboration between San Juan College and WGU was formalized in a recent signing ceremony and is aimed at increasing access to higher education for students across New Mexico. WGU offers fully online programs that are designed to accommodate busy schedules through a self-paced, competency-based learning model.

“This partnership strengthens our commitment to student success and lifelong learning,” said Dr. Toni Hopper Pendergrass, President of San Juan College. “With WGU’s flexible and competency-based model, our graduates can continue their education in a way that fits their lives and goals.”

Key Benefits of the San Juan College–WGU Partnership

Students and employees of San Juan College will enjoy several exclusive benefits when transferring to WGU:

  • Competency-Based Learning: Students progress as they demonstrate mastery, moving at their own pace.
  • Monthly Start Dates: Programs begin on the 1st of each month, offering year-round flexibility.
  • Flat-Rate Tuition: Tuition is billed per six-month term, not per credit hour.
  • Waived Application Fee: Exclusive to SJC graduates and employees.
  • Scholarship Opportunities: Eligible students can apply for the Community College Partner Scholarship, which awards up to $2,500 over four terms.
  • Degree Programs Offered: Business, Technology, Health & Nursing, and Education.

Expanding Access to Higher Education Across New Mexico

Dr. Linda Battles, Regional Vice President of WGU South, emphasized the mutual mission of both institutions:

“San Juan College and WGU share a commitment to making high-quality, affordable education more accessible,” said Dr. Battles. “This partnership opens doors for more New Mexicans to pursue higher education and build better futures.”

WGU currently supports nearly 900 students in New Mexico and boasts over 1,600 graduates from the state — including 50 who began their academic journey at San Juan College.

Alumni Testimonials: Real Stories of Success

Two SJC and WGU alumni, Amber Dick and Miranda Arreola Mangelson, shared their personal success stories at the ceremony. They credited both institutions for providing the tools, flexibility, and support to achieve their academic and career goals.

“Thank you, San Juan College and WGU, for building a bridge that helps more people in our community reach their goals,” said Dick. “I’m living proof that it’s possible.”

Arreola added, “This partnership will open so many doors for students and families in San Juan County. I’m so excited for what’s ahead.”
