A growing initiative designed to introduce students to college and career opportunities at an early age.
More than 1,500 eighth-grade students from 11 local middle schools recently stepped onto the San Juan College campus for the 8th Grade Career Pathways Expo.
Held over two and a half days, the event provided an engaging, hands-on experience that connected students with academic programs, industry professionals and future possibilities.
For many students, it marked their first time visiting a college campus, an experience organizers hope will leave a lasting impression.
“This event is about opening doors early,” said Center for Student Careers and Employment Analyst Jill Bishop. “For many of these students, this is their first time stepping onto a college campus. We want them to see that they belong here and to start thinking about their future now because career exploration doesn’t have to wait until high school or beyond.”
Exploring Career Pathways Through Hands-On Learning
The expo was designed to spark curiosity and help students begin identifying potential career interests. Participants explored a wide range of career pathways and academic programs, including:
- Science, Math and Engineering
- Health Sciences
- Energy and Manufacturing
- Trades and Technology
- Computer Science, IT and Cybersecurity
- Arts, Communication and Humanities
- Business and Entrepreneurship
- Education, Social Sciences and Public Safety
Students rotated through two interactive sessions where they engaged directly with instructors, participated in activities and gained real-world insight into each field.
“I didn’t realize how many options there were,” said one eighth-grade student. “Getting to see everything in person made me excited about what I could do after high school.”
Connecting Education and Industry
In addition to academic exploration, students attended an employer expo in the Graduation Plaza, where more than 40 local employers shared information about careers available in the region. This component of the event plays a vital role in strengthening connections between education and industry.
The 8th Grade Career Pathways Expo also serves as an important bridge between K–12 education and higher education. The event promotes dual credit awareness, college access and community collaboration, ensuring students and families understand the opportunities available to them early in their academic journey.
This large-scale event is made possible thanks to the generous funding provided by Chevron through the San Juan College Foundation and Perkins funding. Their contributions provide essential resources, including materials for interactive activities and meals for all students, teachers and volunteers.
Looking Ahead: Expanding Opportunities for Student Success
As the event continues to grow, organizers are already planning for the future. One key goal is to host the expo earlier in the school year, allowing eighth-grade students to explore career pathways before selecting their freshman high school courses. This proactive approach will help students make more informed decisions about their education and career goals.
Through initiatives like the Career Pathways Expo, San Juan College continues to lead in career exploration, workforce training and student success, ensuring learners of all ages have the tools and support they need to succeed.
