Why did you choose San Juan College?

"I chose to attend San Juan College because it offered the opportunity to stay close to my family while pursuing my education. The college provided a cost-effective pathway for me to earn a Bachelor of Science in Nursing through its dual degree program with UNM. San Juan College provided me with a strong sense of belonging, it made me truly feel like I was part of a supportive and connected community. I was able to build lifelong relationships with both faculty and fellow students which created an environment where I felt valued, encouraged, and motivated to succeed, making my educational journey all the more meaningful."

What did you do to prepare for your career?

"To prepare for my career as a registered nurse, I took on a position as a Nurse Tech at San Juan Regional Medical Center's Emergency Department during my second-to-last semester. This experience provided me with a solid foundation and enhanced my nursing skills and critical thinking, contemplating my education. Before entering the nursing program, I also had the opportunity to job-shadow and volunteer at San Juan Regional Medical Center, further gaining valuable exposure to the healthcare environment. Additionally, I was awarded a scholarship with the VA which not only supported me throughout nursing school but also guaranteed me a position with a VA hospital upon graduation."

What advice would you give to future graduates?

"My heartfelt advice to future graduates of San Juan College's nursing program is to always believe in yourself and never give up. There will be moments when you feel overwhelmed, exhausted and you'll question if you can continue but I promise you, you can do it. Nursing is one of the most challenging professions but it is also the most rewarding. The difference you'll make in someone's life by offering care, comfort, and support during their most vulnerable moments is an indescribable gift. Embrace every challenge, because the impact you have on other will make it all worth it. Stay confident, stay focused, work hard, and believe in yourself."

What was your fondest memory at San Juan College?

"Two memories stand out most. One is from the lectures with one of my professors Richard Barnes, who always lightened our long days with humor and clever jokes, making challenging material easier to remember. The other is from my other professor Maggie Donohue, who was my rock throughout nursing school. Her delightful morning ukulele songs made our classes enjoyable, but it was her constant encouragement and unwavering support that truly kept me going during the toughest moments. Maggie played a pivotal role in shaping me into the nurse I am today, and I will forever cherish her for her guidance and kindness."
